Program description
The Summer Language and Culture Program consists of two 3-week sessions (A and C), one 2-week session (B), two 5-week sessions (D and E) and one 8-week session (F). Students can enroll in any of the sessions, with a minimum course length of 2 weeks and a maximum course length of 8 weeks. Our entire course structure is bound to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).The curriculum is designed so that each new session starts with a review of previously studied grammar constructions and speech patterns. This helps our newcomers get easily incorporated into the learning process.
We offer three intensity levels in Ukrainian: Basic, Standard and Intensive. Our Basic 3-week session consists of 60 hours of morning group lessons with a maximum of 10 participants per group. The Standard 3-week session consists of 60 hours of morning group lessons, 15 lessons of one-to-one afternoon tutoring and 30 hours of evening activities. The Intensive level includes 60 morning group lessons, 30 lessons of one-to-one afternoon tutoring, 30 hours of evening activities, and 15 hours of interactive classes or lectures by guest speakers. Everyday, students have tutoring with native speakers who also accompany them to their evening activities and excursions. This helps create a full-time Ukrainian immersion program for students.

Exemplary Program calendar in .PDF, from 2011

Groups are formed according to an assessment test, which is compulsory for everyone, including beginners. After the first week of the program, if a student feels that he or she is in the wrong group, he or he may discuss the problem with the teacher and the Director of Studies, and may move to a different level.
During the course, students are provided with all necessary textbooks and handouts, to help ensure efficient work on the language.
To advance our students’ knowledge of Ukraine and its society, course lectures are aimed at informing foreigners about modern political, cultural and social issues. Therefore, Elementary + group levels are taught by two teachers; one focusing on grammar and speech patterns, and the other delivering lectures on Ukrainian mentality and traditions, politics and economy, and cultural and historical subjects.
All participants receive a graded certificate stating the course type, course dates, level of Ukrainian and number of ECTS credits earned. The Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) is fully accredited by the Ministry of Education of Ukraine. ECTS credits earned at UCU can easily be transferred to North American, Australian and European universities using the ECTS system.
The allocation of ECTS credits for Ukrainian Language and Culture courses is based on the amount of work necessary for a course. One 60-credit hour course amounts to a total of 120 hours of work (60 hours class attendance, 15 hours tutoring, 10 hours evening activities, and 35 hours group work, independent study, and preparation for exams). Students receive a fixed amount of ECTS credits per graded course.
Transcripts will be provided to those students who have enrolled in a Credit program, attended classes regularly and who have successfully taken all required examinations.
Attendance is compulsory for credited students. Students may not be awarded credits if they have an attendance record of less than 75%.
The School of Ukrainian Language and Culture reserves the right to exclude students from the Summer Program in case of improper behavior.
